My Personal Experience with ADHD & Lion’s Mane

I’ve been exploring natural approaches to focus and mental clarity for years: partly out of curiosity, partly out of necessity. Like many adults, I’ve lived with ADHD most of my life, often navigating the cycles of hyperfocus, distraction, and burnout.

Lion’s Mane wasn’t a magic switch, but it quickly became one of the most meaningful tools in my routine. After a few weeks of consistent use, I started noticing subtle but real shifts that manifesed from having a bit more mental spaciousness, clearer thinking, and fewer of those “foggy” moments that used to derail my day.

What stood out most was the steadiness. Rather than pushing my system or masking symptoms, Lion’s Mane seemed to support a more grounded state of focus, like my nervous system had a bit more bandwidth to stay engaged without feeling overstimulated.

That, for me, was a game changer.

I’ve now incorporated it into my daily stack, and often recommend it as a gentle starting point for others exploring natural support for neurodivergence. As always, your body’s response may be different — but if you’re someone managing ADHD or cognitive strain, I’d say it’s worth exploring.

A Conversation Worth Watching

Medical educator Dr John Campbell and GP Dr Sil recently had a powerful conversation around Lion’s Mane – covering everything from peripheral nerve damage to post-concussion recovery, cognitive performance, mood, and neuroinflammation.

One of the most moving takeaways:

“After two years of post-concussive syndrome, my brother improved significantly within weeks of starting Lion’s Mane tincture.”

Their conversation sheds light on why this mushroom deserves more attention – and why so many people are now incorporating it into their daily lives.

Emerging Research and Studies

Scientific interest in Lion’s Mane is growing, with early studies showing promise for nerve regeneration, neuroprotection, and mood support. Here are a couple worth exploring:

  • Opanuga & Hossain (2024)Exploring the Cognitive and Other Unique Health Benefits of Lion’s Mane Mushroom: A Systematic Review

  • Ghosh et al. (2021)Prospecting medicinal properties of Lion’s Mane Mushroom

While large-scale human trials are still limited, the anecdotal and preclinical evidence is compelling — especially when paired with the long history of use in Traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine.

Part of a Larger Practice

Lion’s Mane entered my life within a much wider exploration of how different mushrooms meet different needs at different times. For some, that journey begins through questions around attention, overstimulation, and the search for a steadier internal rhythm — something I’ve written about more personally in a separate reflection on working with Amanita alongside ADHD, where the focus remains on lived experience and personal responsibility rather than conclusions.

Just as important is where these relationships are formed. Much of what informs the way I work today comes from seasons spent foraging in the forests of Ireland, learning directly from the land, from timing, and from the practice of harvesting with care. That grounding continues to shape how I approach Lion’s Mane — not as an isolated supplement, but as part of an ongoing, place-based relationship with these organisms.

Seen in that light, this isn’t really about a single mushroom, but about the wider rhythm of learning how to listen, prepare, and integrate at a pace the body can actually sustain.

In Summary

More than just a mushroom, Lion’s Mane has become a bridge between ancient wisdom and emerging neuroscience. Let’s face it, we’re all using the mushrrom for a different purpose: whether you’re someone with a neurodivergent path, recovering from stress, or simply want to sharpen your focus, Lion’s Mane is a simple, natural support worth exploring.
